AutoCheck vehicle history reports by VIN

AutoCheck is the vehicle history report from Experian. MotorAPIs clients get it by VIN, with the AutoCheck Score, title brands, accidents and odometer readings, as a web page or a PDF.

What this report is

AutoCheck draws on Experian’s vehicle database: title records, insurance and auction data, fleet and rental registrations. Every report carries the AutoCheck Score, which rates the car against others of the same year and class.

Its sources differ from Carfax, so AutoCheck sometimes lists events Carfax does not have, and the other way round. Many buyers read both before they decide on a car.

What’s in the report

A report shows only what was reported for that VIN. Fewer records means less on file, not a cleaner car.

AutoCheck Score

  • Score based on the car’s history
  • Typical range for cars of the same year and class

Title and registration

  • Title brands such as salvage, rebuilt, flood or lemon
  • Number of owners and registration events
  • Fleet, rental, lease or taxi use, when reported

Accidents and auctions

  • Reported accidents
  • Auction sales and damage noted there, when reported

Odometer

  • Mileage readings with their dates
  • Odometer problems such as a rollback or a broken unit

Questions about AutoCheck reports

Carfax or AutoCheck: which one should I pick?
They use different sources, so neither is complete on its own. Both are available, and for an important purchase it pays to read both.
What is the AutoCheck Score?
A number Experian gives the car from its history, shown next to the usual range for cars of the same year and class. A higher score means fewer problems on record.
Can I keep the report as a PDF?
Yes. You get the full AutoCheck report as a web page and, if you want it, as a PDF.
Do I need an Experian account?
No. The VIN is enough: MotorAPIs clients get the report without an Experian account of their own.
